CURRICULUM

Much of our learning takes place through exploration.  Basic skills of observing, collecting and recording data, inferring, predicting and hypothesizing, classifying, comparing and contrasting, measuring, analyzing and communicating are emphasized this year.  In addition, integrated technology and online resources take students beyond the classroom walls.

Scientific Thinking

Recognize, interpret, and be able to identify how to think scientifically.  Student will investigate the elements of scientific thinking and utilize them in lab situations.

Earth Science - standards addressed

  • 7MS - ESS2-2  Construct an explanation based on evidence for how Earth's surface has changed over scales that ranges from local to global size.

  • 7MS-ESS 2-4  Develop a model to explain how the energy of the Sun and Earth's gravity drives the cycling of water, including changes of state, as it moves through multiple pathways in Earth's hydrosphere.

  • 7MS - ESS 3-2 Obtain and communicate information on how data from past geologic events are analyzed for patterns and used to forecast the location and likelihood of future catastrophic events.

  • 7MS - ESS 3-4  Construct an argument supported by evidence that human activities and technologies can mitigate the impact of increases in human population and per capita consumption of natural resources on the environment.

Life Science - standards addressed

CELLS:

  • 6MS-LS 1-1  Provide evidence that all organisms are made of cells.

  • 6MS-LS1-2  Develop and use a model to describe how parts of cells contribute to the cellular functions of obtaining food, water, and other nuturients for its environment, disposing of wastes, and providing energy for cellular processes.

  • 8MS-LS 1-7  Use informational text to describe that food molecules, including carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, are broken down and rearranged through chmeical reactions froming new molecules that support cell growth and/or release of energy.

GENETICS AND EVOLUTION:

  • 7MS-LS 1-4  Construct an explanation based on evidence for how characteristic animal behaviors and specialized plant structures incrase the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants.

  • 8MS-LS 1-5  Construct an argument based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.
